Meghana had never ever thought that ‘self-esteem’ was of such importance that it would cause her harassment, and that her quest for it would change the direction of her life!
She was born into a well-educated family in a small village in Konkan. She was showered with love and affection at home. After her marriage, she came to the city. Her husband was a little eccentric. Her mother-in-law was also very domineering. Till the time of her daughter’s birth, she faced a lot of problems in her home. By the time her daughter was two years old, she was literally fed up with the situation. Since her in laws were educated, she never had to face physical abuse. However, her mother-in law would constantly taunt her and belittle her maternal home, and this added to her frustration. Her sister would persuade her to look for a job, but her mother-in-law was not ready to look after her grandchild. The only saving grace was that her daughter was the apple of everyone’s eyes. This was the only support she felt; but it wasn’t enough.
Once, during an argument, her husband said, “You just want to sit at home and do nothing.” This hurt her, and with it, her wish to become an entrepreneur was awakened.
After a lot of effort, Meghana got the permission to have four hours to herself. Even though she didn’t have any work, she could be out of the house for those four hours. She was ready to undertake whatever work that came her way. She had only one goal – to restore her prestige in the eyes of her husband. Around the same time, her father suggested that she should try to sell food products from her village.
Meghana was worried about whether she would be able to do it. But her goal would not let her rest. It prompted her to take up this difficult task. She brought some of the tasty products from her village, to be sold in the city. In the four hours that she had, she would go from house to house to sell them. Her father would send her packed boxes from their village. Many times, she had to get the heavy boxes unloaded on her own, because no one from her family approved of what she was doing.
Gradually, in 3-4 years time, by working for 4-5 hours daily, Meghana established contacts with more than 250 households. This gradually began to generate respect for her in her husband’s eyes. She had gone on to attain her goal. There was never a lack of money in her house. But through her own untiring efforts, she had judiciously and tenaciously developed her self-respect.
Today, Meghana’s business has spread far and wide, and she has her own godown. Her husband has begun to help her. She has now established herself as an entrepreneur.
She has attained a good response, as well as prestige and affection from the
households she is in touch with. Being among such people increased her confidence and she was able to experience a new world. The most important thing was that she had achieved her goal, which was the reason behind doing all these things.
For the achievement of our goals, having a strategy is very important, and to imbibe it in ourselves, ‘patience’is the key.
