The story of Columbus

The year was between 1400-1450. A daring seaman named Christopher Columbus had started on a sea voyage with his colleagues. The goal was to bring back essential products from Asian countries for trade into Europe. Means of communication were limited, and the equipment essential for the ships was based on primitive technology. Neither did he know the territory, nor how to get there. He also had no idea of the hardships he would have to face. Every moment, every day, he had to face the challenges thrown at him by the stormy sea…Challenges which dared him in various guises! Sometimes in the form of a storm, sometimes simply in the form of the roar of the mighty sea! At other times, in the form of fierce rains, that threw them completely off track!

Challenges, challenges and more challenges!

But they couldn’t stop Columbus. The horizons he wanted to attain were beckoning him. Natural adversities were comparatively easier to face than the challenges while dealing with his colleagues. Someone fell ill, another couldn’t face the natural changes and daily challenges, one was homesick, the other was scared to death, somebody else was talking of turning back out of fear, and someone else was craving a life of comfort….Not just one or two but innumerable challenges at numerous levels.

No sooner had he dealt with one challenge, than he was confronted with the next. Several days, months, and years must have passed since Columbus and his colleagues had begun their journey.

But Columbus didn’t tire. Even though his body was tired, his attachment to his goal drove him to continue his journey. Several times, he digested the terrible loneliness that would come over him, and struck a conversation with the sea that challenged him; but he never stopped. He was determined to reach the shore. His conviction towards his goal was unflinching.

His passion towards his goal had become his identity. The thought of abandoning his goal didn’t even occur to him. Till the time his goal was achieved, enduring all that was to be endured, accepting new challenges, and undertaking his journey in a positive manner, was his way of life.

He would choose colleagues who were compatible with his way of life, because he would have to deal with and win over their mental agitation. “I don’t want to live an average life like thousands of living beings in the world. My goal is different. I have the ability to do something different. I am ready to undertake the hardships required for this. The most important thing is that I have the mental strength to not let my attention be diverted from my goal for even a minute.” This ideology of his, time and again led him towards his goals.

Among the hundreds of mariners in the world, the one whose name is carved in bold letters in history is Columbus, and the reason for this is his unending passion towards his goal…

What has Columbus taught us?

👉 If we are clear about our goal, we can face any challenge.

👉 Our goals are not to be changed every now and then. We need to be aware of this and keep a control on ourselves and the situation.

👉 While achieving our goal, it is necessary to firmly believe in it. This belief is what leads us towards its achievement.

👉 No matter how tough the journey towards the achievement of our goals, we must remember to fill our lives with joy. Only with a positive mindset we can reach our goal.

👉 Once we decide on our goals, having faith in ourselves is of utmost importance. If we lose faith in ourselves, we may deviate from our goals. Many times, negative thoughts take control of our brain, and cause us to lose sight of our goals.
